DISORDERED EATING/BODY IMAGE
Dr. Lyndsay Elliott treats all forms of eating disorders; males
and females, children, adolescents, and adults including relatives
of those affected with an eating disorder. Dr. Elliott also works
with Athletes and Compulsive Exercisers, Night Eating Syndrome,
Food Addiction, Binge Eating Disorder, Obesity, Compulsive Overeating,
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder
(BDD). Her eclectic approach to therapy varies according to the
needs of the Client, and emphasizes a collaboration of psychodynamic
psychotherapy, interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy,
and coaching/mentoring when appropriate. Working together from
a relational approach, therapy will focus on how you to relate
to your eating disorder, others as well as to yourself.
While learning how to cope with your feelings directly related
to food, eating, body image and weight, therapy is helpful in
gaining control over your behaviors and symptoms, while also
changing maladaptive patterns and facilitating your emotions.
You will learn how to gain access to your “eating disorder
self” (the part that is responsible for disordered eating
behavior), integrate it back into your core self, putting the
healthy self back into control.
As therapy progresses, it is important to focus on what you
appreciate about your body, connecting with the healthy parts
of yourself in order to quiet the critical voice. Through acceptance
and finding your purpose, you can create a new lifestyle which
provides long lasting changes without having to rely on or reject
food as a source of comfort. By regaining a healthy sense of
control, you can break old patterns and derive pleasure from
a deeper place.
Dr. Elliott prefers to work with other health care providers
in a multidisciplinary approach, where her patients can receive
the very best care from providers that will help them to feel
supported from a myriad of areas (nutrition/dietician, psychiatry,
medical, etc.) This is done on a case by case basis as deemed
necessary and in conjunction with patient input.
If you or someone you care about is struggling with an eating
disorder, you are invited to contact Dr. Elliott for an initial
consultation. Many women and men have found freedom from
their struggles with eating disorders utilizing Dr. Elliott’s
caring, understanding and skilled approach to treatment.
